REFLECTIVE

I continued my project by working on animation for Mongolia. There I had difficulty translating a phrase to different versions of the Mongolian language. I understood that we do not have translators for old versions of languages, so I had to make the translation myself without knowing the Mongolian language. I made some small research and understood that there is a way to make a translation without studying the language. For this, I had to translate the phrase from Ukrainian to Mongolian, and then compare the symbols from different Mongolian alphabets based on their pronunciation. I found this method exciting, it took some time to make an actual translation, but I really enjoyed the process and the fact that I was able to do this.

Then, I wanted to plan my exhibition. I think this is essential to create a space, which can communicate with the project idea, and create the atmosphere around it. I saw it as a print on the wall, which would be placed near my flipbook. I wanted to combine the phrase ''I can speak" written in three languages. I really liked the process, I was playing with fonts, and I was combining the words. I was satisfied with the outcome, but then when I discussed this part of my project with friends, one of them said that my font for the Ukrainian language reminds him of the font used for memes. I didn't see it before, but I agreed, I didn't work enough with the Ukrainian type. So, I decided to make research classical Ukrainian types. I understood their style, they were quite elegant, and there were mostly used black/red color. Here I came to another problem. By using another font and color, my image became illegible. I tried many options, but I was still stuck with them. Then, I looked for color palettes, this really helped me to understand which colors should I change. I think I have to study more about color matching, as this really helps to create a good-looking combination, without searching for it, just having this information in your head.

After creating a print I started thinking of why I can't make it 3D. And I didn't find any reason for not doing it. At first, I thought that I could create it from wood. But I wasn't sure if I'd have enough time, and I didn't find the material fitting for my project. So, I started thinking of another material. To my mind, styrofoam was a perfect material. It is quite easy to cut from it and paint it. I could use a workshop to bring to life this idea, but as I remember, my material with a thickness of 10mm was too big for the laser cut. So, I decided to do it myself. At first, I had to measure my material, then understand the scale and draw my image on it. After that, I started to cut it. As always, I thought it will be much faster, but the process required patience and concentration. After cutting it out, I understood, that I need to create a "skeleton" for it. I glued some wooden sticks to the backside of my object. This helped me to make my project more practical for the exhibition.

After painting it, I understood, that I need to do the translation in English of what it actually means. As some part of my project I was working with my native language, sometimes it was hard to remember that not everyone understands it.

I continued my work with animation for Mongolia. I've already had all the words translated, so now, all I had to do was basically animate it digitally using interesting transitions. To my mind, Mongolia is the most interesting country in my project from the view of the alphabet. Mongolian history has so many language changes, that I even couldn't include all of them, so I decided to pick up the ones I liked the most. For this animation, I took the word "freedom". I definitely saw the symbols in black color, but I wasn't sure about the background. To my mind, the red color can be associated with freedom, like on the protests it is used really often. But, on the other hand, black/white are even more common, so I decided to choose them. I worked a lot on the transitions, but I can't say that I am satisfied with all of them. For example, the second from the end seems to be a bit boring for me. probably, I could work more on it or took some break to see how I can change it.

After finishing the animation, I prepared all three book files in InDesign ready for printing. I used a usual printer provided in our accommodation. I tried to make the book the most accurate I could, but it still didn't satisfy me with the quality of the paper. Also, surprisingly for me, the book about Mongolia came out much thicker than the other ones, but I didn't think that it was a big problem, as I described earlier, Mongolia has a bigger history of language.

It is really important for me to be satisfied with the outcome, so I decided, that the books I created I could use as a prototype, and think of a way to get a good printed one. I decided to use the printer in our college, I remembered that one was able to use our own paper. But, the college was closed, so I had to wait. I started to think if my books need covers. On the one hand, they probably don't need them, as it might be not understood that they are flipbooks. But with the covers, my project would look more finished... So I came up with the idea of creating transparent covers from the acetate. I still wasn't sure if I could do that, but I waited for the time I could use the printer.
