REFLECTIVE

During weekends I was thinking of what my final outcome could be to perfectly combine animation in it. I came to the idea of creating a flipbook. In the upcoming tutorial, I had a great opportunity to discuss my new idea with other students. It was important for me to hear other students' feedback, as they are a part of my audience. Students told me that they like this idea more, as by making a flipbook, I can combine both animation and book together. They agreed with my point that creating something digitally doesn't really communicate the topic. I agreed with their opinion.

After a tutorial, I started to work on a prototype for a flipbook. Here I used skills that I gained during the Style project, such as working in InDesign. I liked the process, but it was quite hard for me to understand the way I could create my book. So the great thing to refresh my mind was attending a branding workshop in Chelsea. There I had a great experience trying to create my own logo. I really liked the process; this was an excellent opportunity to try something new not connected with my project. I was delighted with the results I got. I did some sketches and made two final logos. The first one, to my mind, is more successful and legible; it communicates some elegance that I wanted to portray.

After this workshop, I had a new way of inspiration and energy to continue working on my final major project. I started to make a physical prototype of my book. I tried two ways of doing it: with a stapler and sewing. To my mind, the one with sewing was more practical. The animation looked smoother, but I was not satisfied with the appearance of the book. It was pretty hard to leaf it through, and it seemed really unprofessional. Here I came to the problem of how I could make my book more practical and good-looking.

To fresh my mind, I started to think of the exhibition. I knew that I had to create three flipbooks, but how could they be placed? There were two options: on the shelf or the wall. I think that the second option is much more interesting for the exhibition. These books will start to appear as an independent objects, some kind of an installation. Also, I think it is quite important to plan the space near your final outcome. I had to find a balance - it shouldn't be overloaded, but it still has to communicate with objects in an elegant way. I was thinking of creating an inscription, which would cover the wall behind my books and the covers of the books. It looked interesting, but I think it is not developed enough right now.

Also, I think it is initial to manage your time properly, so I started with planning my animations for other flipbooks. I started with the one connected with Ukraine. As I described earlier, I found a metaphor that I really liked - the layering of paint as an implanting other countries' cultures. I saw it as making a video clip, maybe with animated elements. Which method should I use? Probably, it can be stop motion or just filming a video and making screenshots for each page. I decided that the best way to do it now is to try to make it digitally.

At the end of the week, I had a talk with my tutor. I got some feedback, and the thing which inspired me to work further was a piece of advice to think of how can I present my work. There were a lot of options listed. I had to think more of size, place, and materials. I came to the idea of experimenting with a projector. Maybe, I can create an empty book and animation can be projected on it? To sum up, I think this week was really helpful, as I got a new wave of inspiration; tried some techniques, which don't work as I wanted to - this is all experience, and making mistakes now brings me closer to my final outcome.
